Aeronautical industry: Lorraine backs the Aériades cluster

Updated on 2010-07-13

Precision mechanics, metallurgy, foundries, research... The aeronautical industry in Lorraine has staked everything on high technologies and its attractive geographical location to develop the Aériades cluster. This competence cluster provides a coherent, global industrial offer to major specifiers in the sector like Dassault, Airbus, EADS and Boeing.

Aériades, a cluster at the crossroads of Europe

This cluster, the Pôle aérospatial lorrain (Lorraine aerospace cluster) better known under the name of Aériades, is based in Luneville, in Meurthe-et-Moselle, where it shares premises with its scientific representative Ares (Army, research, economics and science). This cluster has about thirty members, including a number of higher education institutes (Ensam and Supelec in Moselle), and electronics, plastics processing, laser optics, metrology and control, R&D companies…  It represents 2,400 jobs and a turnover of 300 million and is part of the Gifas (grouping of French aeronautical and space industries).

Skylander, the cargo plane "made in Lorraine"

Geci International, moreover, chose Lorraine over Portugal to set up its Sky Aircraft SAS subsidiary and joined the cluster with its "Skylander" project, a cargo plane intended for freight and humanitarian flights and short-distance transport. Geci's premises are on the former NATO base at Chambley-Buissières, in Meurthe-et-Moselle. The first plane built in Lorraine should taxi down the runway in 2011.
