Agri-food industry: Lorraine present on every table

Updated on 2009-04-21

With its abundant natural resources, its balanced industrial fabric, made up of local SMEs and international groups, the quality of its infrastructure and dedicated logistics services, Lorraine is positioned as one of the most attractive regions for all the agri-food industries.

A region in the forefront of all its sectors

With some 520 agri-food companies totalising 12,000 direct jobs and an export turnover of 1 billion Euros, Lorraine is one of the leading regions for mineral water packaging, rapeseed production and cheese manufacturing among other things.

The Dairy industry

Number 1 employer in the agri-food sector in Lorraine with over 3,000 people. 1.2 billion litres of milk produced every year, mainly destined for Lorraine's many cheese-making plants.

Lorraine is France's second region for the production of soft cheeses and 4th for the production cheeses made from cows' milk. Munster, Coulommiers, Brie, Caprice des Dieux, Raclette, Babybel, Saint-Paulin, Port Salut… Lorraine is present on every table.

The Cereals industry

Lorraine is one of the biggest rapeseed producing regions, with two large trituration plants, Epilor in Meurthe-et-Moselle and Ineos (biodiesel), which transferred its operations from Germany to Meuse in 2008.

The Meat industry

The most important sector in the region in terms of the number of establishments, the meat industry is developing in three complementary directions: Quality, Tradition and Processing.

The Beverages industry

Before becoming leading brands of mineral waters in the Nestlé group, Vittel and Contrexéville were first towns in the Vosges and in Lorraine.

The second most important agri-food sector in the region in terms of jobs, the beverages industry is living proof that regional SMEs with a strong identity can develop in France and abroad alongside the biggest groups.

70% of the world's production of Mirabelle plums

And of course, Lorraine is THE region of the Mirabelle plum: 300,000 Mirabelle trees, 80 kg of fruit per tree, 70% of world production... Exceptional quality, which in 1999 earned it the appellation "Mirabelles de Lorraine" protected by a Label Rouge and a PGI.

But Lorraine is not content with being the world's leading producer: it is constantly innovating, as in 2010 with a body oil made from Mirabelle plums.

Agri-food businesses: why set up in Lorraine?

The factors of success:

- A large, productive agricultural sector: 86% of the land in Lorraine is under agricultural use or forest.
- Excellent transport infrastructures with, in particular, France's main river cereal port in Metz.
Specialised training at every level: from CAP high school vocational diplomas to Masters degrees, Lorraine offers some thirty specialised courses.
- Expert research centres both publicly funded (ENSAIA, INRA, INSERM…) and private (Nestlé Waters, IFBM).
- Support structures, such as the AIAL, the AGRIA, the EPL AGRO in Bar-le-Duc or the Agro-Industrie 54 club, which provide the terrain for synergies to emerge between the different players.
