Lorraine, second region in France for wind power

Updated on 2010-07-15

At the end of 2009, out of the 4,494 MW of wind power installed in France, 482 MW were in Lorraine,  the second region after Picardy and ahead of the Centre and Brittany.

Already 45 wind farms in Lorraine

Although it is not one of the windiest regions, Lorraine decided as early as 2003 that it would give itself the means to become France's leading region for wind power. After applying a determination and resources to match the stakes in terms of sustainable development, by the end of 2009, it had almost 11% of the installed capacity in France, with 191 wind turbines on different 45 sites in Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle and the Vosges. (SER-FEE, 30/03/2010)

Wind power capacity installed in France in 2009 was an estimated 1,088 MW. France ranks fourth in Europe just behind Italy which has an installed capacity of 1,114 MW; Spain and Germany remain at the top of European market. (EWEA)

The companies involved in the industry in Lorraine are grouped together in the Pôle Eolien Lorrain, which proposes a global subcontracting offer for the construction of wind turbines in Lorraine: blades, masts, brakes, generators... The Pôle Eolien Lorrain cluster is therefore able to offer any wind power project a strong range of skills: lobbying, engineering, project economics, funding, commercial development, design, manufacturing, installation, management, servicing and maintenance...

The people of Lorraine were very quick to adopt the wind power projects, with a wind farm co-funded by private investors being inaugurated as early as 2005 in Lorraine: "Le Haut des Ailes", producing 84 million KWh and supplying 40,000 people with electricity. A first in France.

Projects in Lorraine gather speed

Meuse is the French Departement with by far the highest penetration rate: already over 100% in 2007, forecasts for 2011 are over 150%.

By 2012, 20 wind turbines should be in operation on a site south of Toul, which will extend over the territories of 7 villages in Meurthe-et-Moselle and the Vosges.

There are plans to build a wind farm in the area around Boulay in Moselle (a ZDE or wind power development zone declared in July 2008).

A wind power development zone is being studied in the Galilée valley, consisting of a plan to site 5 wind turbines in the Col du Bonhomme between the Vosges and Alsace...
