Updated on 2010-07-15

Ranked fourth nationally for overall energy production, Lorraine also comes in seventh for solar thermal energy production and second for photovoltaic energy production.

A solid economic environment

The solar power industry has found in Lorraine an industrial environment conducive to its rapid and sustainable development. A few examples:

Viessmann, a company based in Faulquemont (Moselle), is France's leading manufacturer of solar collectors. It has also developed a competence centre for the production of solar thermal collectors and hot water tanks.

Carbone Lorraine, a company founded in Lorraine which now has operations the world over, is a world leader in high temperature applications for isostatic graphite, one of the components in photovoltaic cells.

Total has set up a subsidiary, Total Energie Solaire, to develop its photovoltaic projects and has plans to set up a unit to produce silicon wafers for the photovoltaic industry on the old Vernejoul mine site at Porcelette (Moselle), in partnership with GDF Suez.

Solar energy already well established in Lorraine

Lorraine ranks second nationally for photovoltaic equipment with 6% of existing installations and third nationally for solar thermal equipment on private properties with 8% of existing installations.

On the industrial front, Laboratoires Lehning in Sainte-Barbe (Moselle) were the first company to opt for solar energy production (heating and hot water production).

More recently, the roof of the Schlossberg football stadium in Forbach (Moselle) was equipped with photovoltaic panels to produce electricity and domestic hot water.
