The automotive industry in Lorraine: a complete value chain

Updated on 2009-04-23

In Lorraine, number 1 French region for automotive equipment making*, almost 16,000 workers are involved in every stage of the automotive value chain, within a dense and structured network of 82 establishments, regional SMEs and subsidiaries of major international groups.

A big small car builder: Smart is winning in Lorraine

The dynamics of a major automotive region

The automotive industry in Lorraine has succeeded in taking advantage of the conversion of traditional regional industries: building on solidly established know-how and industrial skills, it has invested in the technologies necessary to turn itself into a comprehensive, structured and competitive regional industry.

Thanks to its triple borders and central location in the heart of the Great Region (Luxembourg, Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, Wallonia in Belgium and Lorraine) and Greater Eastern France (Alsace, Franche-Comté, Burgundy, Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine), Lorraine is today the first French region for automotive equipment making, ahead of the Loire region and Rhône-Alpes.

A stimulating concentration of clusters

With a total of 120,000 employees in this large and stimulating European space, where over 1.5 million vehicles come off the assembly lines each year, the automotive companies, vehicle and equipment makers, complement one another and are organised in clusters (Automotive Saarland, Automobilzuliefer Initiative, Perfo Est, AKJ Automotive...), competitiveness clusters (Matéralia for innovative materials) and collective operations such as Autoessor.
