The major paper and cardboard industry players are present in Lorraine

Updated on 2009-09-09

Lorraine is the number one region in France for the paper and cardboard industry, producing 1,400,000 tonnes a year (14 % of national output). The reasons for its success: considerable forestry resources, a dense river system, a skilled workforce and the close proximity of large international markets. The proof: numerous international paper manufacturers have chosen to set up operations here.

Brand names from Lorraine recognised worldwide

In the XVth century, Arches vellum paper was already earning an international reputation for the Vosges town from which it takes its name. Today, the companies involved in the paper and cardboard industry in Lorraine include major names such as Clairefontaine with its famous exercise books or France Cartes, supplier of playing cards to casinos the world over, from Las Vegas to Shanghai.

The world's leading paper manufacturers come to Lorraine

Drawn by the many advantages offered by Lorraine, numerous international groups have come to the region, strengthening its existing industrial fabric: The American firm Kimberly Clark, the Italians Sofidel and Cartiera Lucchese, the Finns Ahlstrom Labelpack and UPM Kymmene with Raflatac and the Papeteries de Châtelles, the Irish company Cartonnages de Lorraine, the Norwegians Norske Skog, the Franco-British firm ArjoWiggins..

A highly structured paper industry

Most of the companies in the paper and cardboard industry in Lorraine are members of Copacel (French confederation of the paper, cardboard and cellulose industry) and of Papest (the East of France papermakers' federation).

On the Campus Fibres in Épinal, alongside the Pôle Fibres Grand Est, the newly opened CTP (Technical Paper Centre) is another asset for the industry's companies, providing them with scientific and technical support through a range of services covering research, industrial development, expertise and information.
