The timber industry in Lorraine, from Sélection Vosges to the Pôle Fibres

Updated on 2010-11-16

More than a third of Lorraine is covered with forest (35.5%). The Departement of the Vosges is the most wooded with 280,000 ha out of the region's 840,000. For its part, Meuse is the French Departement that produces the most beech. With its many advantages, the region is constantly innovating and investing more in research on timber and its derivatives: in France, one project in three takes place in Lorraine.

Pôle Fibres: the strength of a multi-sector cluster

Unique in France, Lorraine has integrated its timber industry in a global cluster encompassing four fibre sectors: timber, paper & cardboard, textiles and composites. The Fibres Competitiveness Cluster (Pôle de compétitivité Fibres) is located on the campus of the ENSTIB (higher national institute for timber technologies and industries) in Epinal. Its industrial interface in Nancy, the CRITT Bois, is a technological resource centre.

A quality label for sawing and certified forests

Second French region in terms of the value of its forest production, Lorraine is distinguished by the first French collective brand for softwood sawing, the Sélection Vosges quality label, national leader with 350,000 m³ of timber sawn per year.

And on the sustainable development front, it has committed to a process of certification of its forests according to the PEFC standard (programme for the endorsement of forest certification). It is Gipeblor (Interprofessional grouping for the promotion of the timber business in Lorraine) which is in charge of PEFC Lorraine.

Secondary processing of timber

But Lorraine is always looking further ahead and seeking to develop its skills in timber processing. It is thus the leading French region for the construction of timber-framed housing. Numerous companies recognised in their field have set up in Lorraine: Cuny, leader in timber construction, Depalor, leading French manufacturer of melamine laminated surface particle board, Chêne de l'Est, French leader in solid wood parquet, Merrain international (US), European leader in stave production.

Lorraine has also specialised in the production of traditional seats in small runs. Created by great designers, they can be found in all the world's grand hotels.
