Vosges: an alliance of contrasts

Updated on 2009-05-12

The Departement of the Vosges is a land of  contrasts, plains and medium-altitude mountains, industry and tourism. Much more than the clichéd image of the famous "blue line of the Vosges", this is a Departement of character, recognised for its culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Route des Crêtes, Vosges

Route des Crêtes, Vosges

The Vosges were and remain one of the strongholds of the French textile industry, which has undergone a radical transformation over the last few years. Over half of French thread and cotton fabric is produced in Lorraine, mainly in the Vosges. Textile manufacturing has become more specialised and more and more sophisticated, with carbon fibres, encapsulation and special threads for the aeronautical industry and medical sector.

Timber is another important component in the industry of the Vosges. This industry operates in one of France's finest forested areas. The industry covers all aspects from silviculture to the processing of wood into timber structures, joinery products, parquet, particle board, not forgetting furniture production and stringed instruments in Mirecourt. The industry also benefits from the presence of the Higher national institute for timber technologies and industries (ENSTIB) and a regional innovation and technology transfer centre (CRITT) for the timber industries.

The paper industry, the plastics industry and metallurgy are also well developed in the Vosges, which also successfully cultivates an image as a tourist destination. Spas at Vittel, Contrexéville, Bains-les-Bains and Plombières-les-Bains draw in many tourists, as do the ski resorts in the Vosges mountains.

The Vosges is gambling on  this original combination of industry, tourism and culture to highlight its technical know-how and lifestyle and so continue its economic development.
